Week of April 27, 2026 - Small World Seafood Update (Copy)
Hello everybody!!
Wow...what a week that was for soft shells! Earlier in the year than usual? Yes. But these guys were nice and fat! Plus sword was on the menu? Yeah. that was fun...
We have a ferw special things for you guys this week. Keep in mind that this Sunday is Mother's Day so everybody has to up their game a bit. And we have just what you need to do so.
First up, we have sushi grade bigeye tuna from Australia!! One of the very best places in the world for tuna supplying the Pac Rim with tuna, this is always beautiful stuff. The way they handle and care for the tunas is remarkable. The best on the planet, actually. So you have that.
Plus, as some of you know by now, halibut season and lobster season begin around the same time in Nova Scotia. Boats gear up for halibut first and then regear for lobster. So, we will have fresh claw and knuckle meat this week!!! And the price dropped a tad down to $50 for a pound! Now, that may seem like a lot for the newbies. But consider that it takes 5 pounds of whole lobster to get 1 pound of meat and that you can make 5 lobster rolls out of one pound and, well, now it sounds pretty cheap! Plus, it's for the moms or in tribute to the moms, right?
Everybody knows that fuel prices have gone up. Everybody knows that certain items like crab meat have become more expensive. Both of those things can create what is called 'demand destruction'. Meaning, when prices on certain things go high enough, people buy less of it. That creates problems for suppliers. But some get innovatiive and I love that.
So, one of our crab meat suppliers decided to try doing something that the industry doesn't do. Instead of separating all the parts of the crab into different cans (claw, special, lump and jumbo lump), they decided to pack the mix into one can layered so you can see the distinction. Claw on the bottom followed by special, lump and topped with a layer of jumbo lump. And here's the thing. Without having to separate each component, their production costs went way down and they could sell it for less. Genius. Plus, you get the flavors from each part of the crab which is amazing. I tried a couple of cans (skeptically if I am to be honest) and made some crab cakes. Honestly, I think they were the best crab cakes I've ever had. You get flavor, you get texture, you get lumps. And at $28 per pound? Well, you beat the market easily..
And top put a cherry on top of that, we are blast freezing some gorgeous Canadian steelhead trout!! So many of you are jonesing for some. I know. The withdrawal is bad...
We also have more Boston mackerel fillets! Great stuff for the brain. We have branzini butterflied and whole, rainbow trouts, Chilean seabass fillets, Black cod fillets..A kazillion things to have fun with, really...Hamachi loins and kamas...
As a special item, we have some amazing smoked Canadian Bacon from El Camino. This is the real deal for this smoked pork loin. It's one of my favorites...Plus, the fresh pasta this week will be buccatini for a change. Great for the lobster meat or crabmeat too!
And as always, I am still keeping my eyes peeled for something else coming our way. You never know..There are a few possibilities still to reveal themselves....
You see how much fun we can have? I feel it too...
Littleneck clams are the shellfish of the week....Pair with Settentatre Pasta Co's organic fresh buccatini for cheapest meal ever!! Not sure about oysters yet ... We have labneh and smoked fish..So many good things..
Plenty of crab meat, shrimp, etc....
I know, I know..Lots of words...
Anyway, as usual, I have to thank all of you guys for being in our lives. What an incredible community we live in...
