Week of March 2, 2026 - Small World Seafood Update
Hello everybody!!
We are over the hump, folks. Hard to believe that last Monday we had a foot of snow on the ground. Ahhhhh....the power of denial and mental suppression....Next week, it'll be in the 70s...freaky...
From our end of things, now is the time for us to think about the Spring and Summer and what we want to do to keep things interesting for ourselves. In a couple of weeks, I take the whole crew up to Boston for the International Seafood Show. It really helps connect us to the broader industry. Plus, we always find one or two cool things there to bring to you.
This is also a time, right now, when farmers markets in the area are trying to solidify their lineups for the summer. We will be adding one more stop. Or hope to, anyway. First on our wishlist is the Clark Park Farmers Market. We have tons of people living in West Philly who would love us to stop there even if it is on an every other week basis. We've submitted our application to the Food Trust so now it is up to them to decide if they want us there or not. Actually, we submitted our first application this past August and a second one last week.
Now, I am not one to ask people to do anything on our behalf but if you live there and want us there, I can't stop you from emailing Alyssa Thayer, Senior Manager, and Bilal Rice, Program Manager for the Food Trust. Their emails are on their website in the Who We Are section. I think we would be a great addition to that market. As we have been in Chestnut Hill and Bryn Mawr. Anyway, a few of you have been asking and this is where we are at. We could use a little Tush Push here...
Okay, onto the fish for the week! The weather is clearly starting to get nicer and the seas are calming. Faroe Island salmon will be back this week. I love that people really have embraced Steelhead trout as we love it too. So, to kind of keep that fish in the mix, we are blast freezing a bunch of it and will offer that up along with blast frozen salmon. Both still sushi grade even frozen...FYI..
Also landing in the fish markets, more Boston mackerel that we will fillet. More cod cheeks to blast freeze. And we will have some really beautiful monkfish fillets which we will blast freeze as well! I love monk at this time of year. Great stuff out of Rhode Island....
Plus, more fresh fluke flounder fillets!! This is a great time of the year for this fish. The waters are cold, theey are feeding like crazy and fattening up. That means more meatiness and flavor! One of those fish that seems so pedestrian but when you have it, you wonder why you don't eat it more often..It is so delicious...
And with the miss on Martha's Vineyard bay scallops last week due to the weather, this week will be perfect for it! Gorgeous little pearls which are also sushi grade so get your ceviche on!!!
We have plenty of our usual suspects around. And as far as special features go, Wagyu ground beef is back in the mix! We have more shrimp and crab canneloni back too!
More smoked albacore tuna spread is around. Grab it while you can.
And as always, I am still keeping my eyes peeled for something else coming our way. You never know..There are a few possibilities still to reveal themselves....
You see how much fun we can have? I feel it too...
PEI mussels are the shellfish of the week....Pair with Settentatre Pasta Co's organic fresh spinach linguini for cheapest meal ever!! Big Breakers are the oysters from Maine this week ... We have labneh and smoked fish..So many good things..
Plenty of crab meat, shrimp, etc....
I know, I know..Lots of words...
Anyway, as usual, I have to thank all of you guys for being in our lives. What an incredible community we live in...
