Week of August 11, 2025 - Small World Seafood Update
Hello everybody!!
What a gorgeous weekend! I really hope that everyone enjoyed it. Weather is one of those things that is completely out of our control but can affect us in many ways as far as our emotions and moods go. There are so many days when things are not ideal but we adapt. And then there are days like these that are so perfect and pleasant and enjoyable. What a gift.
This week, we have a few special things in store for you. Coming off of the full moon, we have some sushi grade gorgeous fresh albacore tunas coming in from Maine! This has certainly been the year for tuna and that's one more thing to be grateful for. Terrific in poke bowls or sesame crusted. And just as terrific in a stew or braised in a sauce such as a puttanesca..
Also on the board for this week, fresh Venezuelan Jumbo lump crab meat!!! We are still in the heart of summer and what tastes better than crab meat on a hot day? This stuff is excellent. And so good as a cocktail or in pasta or try your hand at a risotto using our crab stock...so good!
And speaking of summery things, we brought in a nice shot of whole fresh sardines that we cleaned and blast froze and vac packed! Ahhh...memories of the Mediterranean..These litttle guys come from Portugal..
I feel the beginnings of the pangs of withdrawal happening around the city. So, without adding more stress to the situation, I think you are all due for some relief. So fillets of Black Cod (also known as sablefish) are back! Grab your miso and start marinating!!!
Since we introduced hamachi collars about a year ago, many of you have discovered that you absolutely love them! So, we plan on having them more frequently! Such an easy thing to prepare and such an amazing thing to eat!
Faroe Island salmon, sushi grade and best in show is here this week. Same for Hokkaido scallops from Japan. We have lobster tails, head on shrimp, sushi grade rock shrimp perfect for ceviches and skate cheeks are the cheek of the week. Wait...I like the rhyme of that...
As far as special items go this week, I am happy to tell you that we have smoked lamb merguez from El Camino this week! Yay! This is such a great sausage that is cooked through and in a lamb casing too. Try this on its own or with you littleneck clams or make a paella with it instead of chorizo for a little Moorish flair..delish!
And let's talk whitefish salad. I know some of you guys have noticed a bit of inconsistency with the chunky whitefish. We've noticed it too. So, like usually happens when we seee a problem, we like to take things into our own hands. So we are starting to make our whitefish salad from scratch from now on. No more bones, no more sitches where there are no chunky pieces or too many. And, to boot, as much as I love whitefish salad, and I really do, I think our own mix is better.
Add to that a nice shot of smoked albacore tuna spread made in partnership with El Camino and your bagels with definitely have nice partners to dance with.
Lastly, it looks like the cost of tariffs may be locking in and suppliers are now ading them fully into many prices. So, branzino is going up in price, unfortunately. Not a ton. From $24 to $26. Many suppliers were absorbing the cost until clarification came but with the new deal with the EU, they are now passing it on. Look, it's still cheaper than the restos by a mile. I don't know what restaurants can do but it doesn't look good on that side unfortunately. Things are getting so expensive on their menus...tough business.
But, we do what we can to bring you the best quality at the best value and have fun doing it so there you go...We can have a good time and save money by not eating out..
You see? How much fun we can have?
Littleneck clams are the shellfish of the week....Pair with Settentatre Pasta Co's organic fresh spinach linguini for cheapest meal ever!! Not sure on oysters yet ... We have labneh and smoked fish..So many good things..
Plenty of crab meat, shrimp, etc....
I know, I know..Lots of words...
Anyway, as usual, I have to thank all of you guys for being in our lives. What an incredible community we live in...
