Week of June 1, 2026 - Small World Seafood Update

Hello everybody!!

Nothing to complain about with this weather. Hopefully, we have this for a few more weeks before we turn into a sauna..Ease into the heat. You know?

As I've been saying for a few weeks, we can all see the price of gas going up and so can the fishers. For fresh catch, i can see the beginnings of elevated pricing. For more stable items like pasteurized products or frozen products, I can see that input costs in new production is raising the price on certain items. But, this is a dangerous road to embark on for a supplier.

If you raise prices too much too quickly, you crush demand. The term is 'demand destruction'. Think of how much less people are willing to drive a car when the price goes up. Too much destruction and the price needs to go down to start moving product or else you see can see it crash. But if you don't raise prices, you squeeze margins. Which could mean having to cut back on staff to make up the shortfall. Too many get layed off and you don't have buyers anymore which can also cause a crash in price. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

From my end of things, I will look out for the opportunities that favor us as well as find interesting products that have value. Like the whole crab crab meat. That stuff is insanely good! But it's not all doom and gloom and just like the stock market, some people can come out winners even when things go down..

Well, one more new start to a season and we are super happy about it. Fresh yellowfin tuna from Canada!!! These yellowfins ten to be a little smaller but with that, you get nice color and nice firmness. Being from Canada, you also get a bit more fattiness than you would usually see in a yellowfin which means more flavor.  Love it!!! Poke bowls, babeeeee!!!

We also have more fresh cooked claw and knuckle lobster meat from Nova Scotia! I figure that if I just binge on lobster rolls now, i will get sick of them by July and save so much money by the end of summer...

We have more Icelandic cod  cheeks this week! I love getting texts or emails from people trying them for the first time and telling me how blown away they are by them. Yup. Toldja...

We have more Spanish mackerel fillets too! Mild and delish. And beautiful, too!

We have Faroe Island salmon and Hokkaido scallops. Both sushi grade..Whole daurades, butterflied branzini and rainbow trouts..heck, so many good things to choose from..

We also have a nice shot of shrimp and crab canneloni back into the fold. Plenty of that whole crab crab meat that is fantastic for crab cakes and pastas.

And as always, I am still keeping my eyes peeled for something else coming our way. You never know..There are a few possibilities still to reveal themselves....

You see how much fun we can have? I feel it too...

Littleneck clams are the shellfish of the week....Pair with Settentatre Pasta Co's organic fresh buccatini for cheapest meal ever!!  Not sure about oysters yet... We have labneh and smoked fish..So many good things..

Plenty of crab meat, shrimp, etc....

I know, I know..Lots of words...

Anyway, as usual, I have to thank all of you guys for being in our lives. What an incredible community we live in...
