Week of March 30, 2026 - Small World Seafood Update
Hello everybody!!
I love this week of holidays. Passover and Easter always intertwine each other. There is a reason, of course. The Last Supper was, indeed, a Seder. Without getting too religious about it all, there is a part of each that I really focus on. The idea of rebirth.
This is the time of year where the trees begin to bud. Where plants start to pop out of the ground. After a season where you can see the lack of life around you in nature, the sun hits the equinox and life begins its cycle once again. And besides the Seder link between the holidays, both feature an item quite important to this symbolism. The Egg. Whether it is on a Seder plate or hidden for a children's hunt, the egg is the universal symbol for birth and renewal. What a lovely way to think about transitions and cycles with the mystery of what is inside of the egg and hope and optimism for something good in the future. Now, that's something I can celebrate...
Something else to celebrate is fresh Steelhead trout! Back again this week as ferocious winds make it difficult for our suppliers in the Faroe Islands to pull salmon out of the waters. We will have blast frozen portions of salmon as well as whole sides but this week, Steelhead will be the king. A cousin of salmon and even looks so similar to it, it is mild inflavor a fatty so it will melt in your mouth whether you like it cooked or raw in a poke bowl. Yes, it is sushi grade!
Also sushi grade and a real star in the kitchen, we have more super frozen Chutoro!! This is the fatty outer part of the bluefin tuna that is just, well, terrific. It melts in your mouth but with a meatier texture than the Otoro belly. There are special instructions on how to thaw the tuna so please look at the video online. Super important..
We have Hokkaido scallops, fresh and blast frozen. Both sushi grade as well. We have Black Cod fillets and Chilean Seabass fillets for your holiday tables...Branzini and Rainbow trout are a must...
We also tried something unique from one of our Canadian suppliers up in Boston when we were at the Seafood Show a couple of weeks ago. They produce, in Nova Scotia, a small cooked wild shrimp that is outstanding for making things like shrimp salads. You just thaw them out and prepare your salad. Of course, the classic is with mayo, worchestershire, mustard, dill, lemon juice and veggies of your choice like celery and carrot. But you can go a lot of ways with it. It is a very sweet and tasty shrimp. That's for sure. And for a size reference, our smaller peeled and deveined shrimp are 26 to 30 counts per pound. These totally peeled and cooked shrimp are 150 to 200 per pound. So pretty small! But that's what makes them so unique!! A perfect item for your Easter table served as a salad, over toast or in a sandwich!
Plus whole daurades and whole barbouni (rouget)!
We have plenty of our usual suspects around. And as far as special features go, Wagyu ground beef is back in the mix!
More smoked albacore tuna spread is around. Grab it while you can.
And another special feature from our friends at Good Good Chocolate, we have more frozen chocolate lava cakes! Using only the best ingredients of chocolate and butter, these things are just decadent. And with the Spring in mind, they will have have a passionfruit filling! Some of you may think it is a little different but trust me. The acidity in the Passionfruit really cuts the richness of the dark chocolate. It is truly fine..And it is completely flourless too!!
And with baseball season started, the Pavlovian bells begin to ring. So, this week we will have more smoked hot dogs from El Camino!! These things are just terrific. Once you have one of these, you'll have a hard time buying hot dogs in a supermarket again!
And as always, I am still keeping my eyes peeled for something else coming our way. You never know..There are a few possibilities still to reveal themselves....
You see how much fun we can have? I feel it too...
PEI mussels are the shellfish of the week....Pair with Settentatre Pasta Co's organic fresh spinach linguini for cheapest meal ever!! Not sure about oysters yet ... We have labneh and smoked fish..So many good things..
Plenty of crab meat, shrimp, etc....
I know, I know..Lots of words...
Anyway, as usual, I have to thank all of you guys for being in our lives. What an incredible community we live in...
